Making empires
Pres. Washington said to steer clear of alliances
Enough home problems
Limited military
By end of 1800s, economy not so small anymore
Need resources and markets

3. I. Imperialism US had already spread westward
Those new areas were settled by Americans
Intended to make them regular states
Even Alaska, bought in 1862, became a state in 1958
These new territories were never meant to become states
Were to be used for raw materials and new markets

4. II. Reasons to spread
Capitalism meant a need for resources and markets
Surplus of goods need to be sold somewhere
Increase demand for American crops too

5. II. Reasons to spread Nationalism spreads in America
Proud to be an American…
Expanded navy to:
Compete with imperialist countries
Protect trade
Secure markets
Spread Christianity

6. II. Reasons to spread Social Darwinism
Americans are superior to other people
Especially non-white people
US has the responsibility to expand to help those people get better
“White Man’s Burden”

7. II. Reasons to spread Wants to be a world power
Looks at European countries and is jealous
Uses the situations in Latin America to step up
