2 I. Imperialism Expansion into new territories to seek raw materials and new markets Making empires Pres. Washington said to steer clear of alliances We had followed the idea of isolationism since then Keep out of the world’s affairs By end of 1800s, economy not so small anymore Need resources and markets

3 I. Imperialism Westward expansion was just like imperialism
Those new areas were settled by Americans Looking for raw materials and new markets Intended to make them regular states Even Alaska, bought in 1862, became a state in 1958 These new territories were never meant to become states People were too different Were to be used for raw materials and new markets

Reasons to spread Using capitalism led to industrialism which led to imperialism Using property to make a profit led to factories Using factories to produce meant a need for raw materials and new markets Surplus of goods had to be sold somewhere Easiest way to get those was building an empire

5 II. Reasons to spread Nationalism spreads in America
Proud to be an American… Expanded navy to: Compete with other imperialist countries Protect trade Secure markets Spread Christianity

6 II. Reasons to spread Social Darwinism
One group is more fit to survive Americans are superior to other people Especially non-white people US has the responsibility to expand to help those people get better “White Man’s Burden” The same thinking as “positive good”

7 II. Reasons to spread Wants to be a world power
Looks at European countries and is jealous Uses the situations in Latin America to expand our influence
