Single-parent Family Mother or Father takes care of the children Occurs as result of: Divorce Separation Death Children outside of marriage 1/8 of families

Extended Family Several generations of family living together

Foster Parenting Provides children with substitute families while their parents are unable to care for them Can be for long or short time periods

Childless Family A couple without children Some couples choose to not have children while others physically can not.
