3. Nuclear Family
A mother, father & one or more children (biological or adopted)
Advantages
- Two people share parenting responsibilities
- Financial responsibilities shared
- Examples of male & female role models
Disadvantages
- Only one parent home a large part of time

4. Extended Family Relatives other than parents and children Advantages

Advantages
- They can be an important resource for each other when they are needed.
Disadvantages
- They do not always live nearby

5. Blended Family
2 parents, or both of whom have children from a previous relationship. Step- parents & siblings, half-siblings
Advantages
- Adults share responsibilities
Disadvantages
- Need more patience
- Adjustment to new roles
- May have to share more

6. Single Parent Family Only one parent & one or more children
Occurs from divorce, death or leaving of a parent never having been married.
Advantages
- Learn Responsibility
- Independence
- Can be more stable
Disadvantages
- No one else to help
- Less free time
- Less money
- Need Role models

7. Adoptive Family
Non-related Children are not biologically linked to their parents
Parents must go through a legal process to make children part of the family
May have both birth and adopted children

8. Foster Family
Non-related Children are not biologically linked to their foster parents
Parents offer a stable home and care for children who are in the care of the government or cannot be taken care of by their birth parents for a period of time.
This is usually temporary
May have both birth and foster children

9. Cooperative Family
Non-related people who get together to rear their children in one household
Advantages
- Support
- Share Responsibilities
- Financial help/ sharing
Disadvantages
- Adjustment
- No privacy
- Fighting

10. Family without Children
Non-related people who marry and decide not to have children
This is either because they do not want to have children or they are not able to
