1 Types of Families Grade 9 Religion

2 Family Two or more persons related by blood, marriage, or adoption who live in the same household – or – a group who love and care for each other Role – Parts one play when interacting with others What are your roles?

3 Nuclear Family A mother, father & one or more children (biological or adopted) Advantages - Two people share parenting responsibilities - Financial responsibilities shared - Examples of male & female role models Disadvantages - Only one parent home a large part of time

4 Extended Family Relatives other than parents and children Advantages
Grandparents Aunts and Uncles Cousins Advantages - They can be an important resource for each other when they are needed. Disadvantages - They do not always live nearby

5 Blended Family 2 parents, or both of whom have children from a previous relationship. Step- parents & siblings, half-siblings Advantages - Adults share responsibilities Disadvantages - Need more patience - Adjustment to new roles - May have to share more

6 Single Parent Family Only one parent & one or more children
Occurs from divorce, death or leaving of a parent never having been married. Advantages - Learn Responsibility - Independence - Can be more stable Disadvantages - No one else to help - Less free time - Less money - Need Role models

7 Adoptive Family Non-related Children are not biologically linked to their parents Parents must go through a legal process to make children part of the family May have both birth and adopted children

8 Foster Family Non-related Children are not biologically linked to their foster parents Parents offer a stable home and care for children who are in the care of the government or cannot be taken care of by their birth parents for a period of time. This is usually temporary May have both birth and foster children

9 Cooperative Family Non-related people who get together to rear their children in one household Advantages - Support - Share Responsibilities - Financial help/ sharing Disadvantages - Adjustment - No privacy - Fighting

Non-related people who marry and decide not to have children This is either because they do not want to have children or they are not able to

11 The Changing Family People are deciding to remain single

People are marrying later in life Couples are having children later in life Families are having fewer children More expensive to raise children More couples are deciding to not have children Double income – two salaries There are more divorced adults There are more Single-Parent Families Grown Children are moving back in with their parents Divorce, unemployment, never-married, increasing age of first marriage, high cost of living, low entry salary Grandparents are moving in
