Personal Space This describes the immediate space surrounding a person. It surrounds us everywhere you go. The bubble becomes larger or smaller, depending on the person you are interacting with. Intimate Space- Very comfortable Personal Distance- Good friends/family Social Distance- Acquaintances Public Distance- Public/strangers

Cultural Differences with Space People from crowded places, such as China, India or New York City, will be comfortable with smaller bubbles. People from more isolated areas are likely to have larger bubbles.

Differences in Eye Contact In the United States it is seen as showing interest and being confident and bold. Seen as a positive thing. In Europe (Spain, France, Germany) it is seen as proper and polite. In the Middle East there are strict rules about eye contact between the sexes-connected to religious laws about appropriateness. In Asia, Latin America, and Africa eye contact can be taken as a challenge to authority. It is seen as polite to not maintain eye contact. In Japan it is seen as an invasion of one's privacy

Meeting and Greeting Americans greet with a nice firm handshake. In Asian countries the polite form of greeting is a bow. The lower you bow the deeper the respect you have for the person you are bowing to. In Spain, Italy, and Eastern Europe men greet with a kiss on the cheek. Americans smile when greeting while Koreans think it be be rude for adults to smile in public. Smiling in public is a sign of embarrassment.

Speaking Volume Differences Americans view a raise voice as a sign of anger or hostility. In other countries raised voices signify an exciting conversation. Among Asians the volume is very low and Americans are seen as rude and thoughtless because of the volume. In Russia conversations are seen from outsiders to be angry yelling matches but they are not.

A Few More Differences Americans think nothing of pointing at an object or another person. Native Americans consider it extremely rude to point with a finger and instead point with their chin In China the polite alternative is to point with the entire hand, palm facing up.
