BUILDING & GROWING A SHRM CHAPTER LEADERSHIP 2013 BUILDING & GROWING A SHRM CHAPTER Courtesy of SHRM

Membership 2013 A goal without a plan is just a wish. by Antoine de Saint-Exupery Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. by Ralph Waldo Emerson Membership 2013 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

STARTING & INCREASING YOUR SHRM CHAPTER STEP ONE: Recruit STEP TWO: Engage STEP THREE: Volunteer STEP FOUR: Retain 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

RECRUIT

RECRUIT There are many ways to recruit HR Professionals Invite each Board Member and volunteer to recruit Encourage peers, managers, and HR Business Partners to join Invite friends in HR to attend a monthly meeting as your guest Solicit vendors used by each of your Board Members Invite your At-Large Membership to join your chapter using email or mass mail distribution Export reports from your website to send email reminder to local members with upcoming renewal dates 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

RECRUIT Some ideas on how to recruit New Members Invite HR Professionals to a meeting to see the benefits of your chapter Invite Vendors you deal with through your employer Partner with other professional organizations in the area for membership exchange 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

RECRUIT Recruiting Tools Have a drawing for a free membership Have a membership registration table set up for attendees to join or members to renew Allow on-line membership registration using Chapter website Offer discounts to non-board members for 5 or more referrals Award free membership to an Executive allowing membership for 3 or more HR staff members Grant one free membership for each Gold, Silver, Bronze Sponsor 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

ENGAGE

MEMBER ENGAGEMENT Membership Engagement Tools: Speak about and recruit members to volunteer to work with the various areas of your board. Some ideas are: Membership Committee Government Affairs Diversity College Relations Certification Workforce Readiness 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

MEMBER ENGAGEMENT Each of us want to feel needed. Depending on the size of your chapter, you may want to hold a quarterly membership breakfast, or invite each new member to a board meeting. Introduce your members to the various websites to demonstrate on-line resources available to each. SHRM National website Local SHRM website HR Florida website Allow time for networking, it’s one of the reasons members join Encourage Board Members to “shadow” with 1-3 new members 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

VOLUNTEER

VOLUNTEERISM Membership has Talent: Our membership (both student and professional) has many talents which can be utilized through the Chapter. We need to tap those talents to utilize their expertise. Board members head the committees to create a succession plan for the chapter and engagement opportunities for members Allow a forum or tool for members to volunteer their talents (i.e.. Speakers, marketing, technical skills, event planning, decorating, etc.) Respond to volunteers timely and encourage their input and feedback 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

RETAIN

RETENTION Retaining your Membership: Have your President request a list of expired members at the end of each month Use your Chapter Management, Membership Directors, and/or Membership Committee to reach out to the members to remind them of their expired National Membership, via: Email Letter Other mass mail distribution Personal phone call 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

RETENTION Retaining your Membership: Survey your members: Is the chapter meeting their needs? Are the meetings valuable? Involve your members Help your members Make it fun! 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

BREAK OUT TIME

BREAK OUT TIME Brainstorm your favorite tips to Recruit New Members Engage Your Membership Encourage Volunteering Retain Current Members 20th Annual HR Florida Leadership Conference Renaissance Orlando at Sea World – January 12, 2013

Maryellen A. Castellano, SPHR It is now time to grow your chapter! Please do not hesitate to contact your Membership Chairs for any assistance. Maryellen A.
