World History: August 10th Get out your world history syllabus & proof of website access (phone, screenshot, etc). We will spend the first few minutes reviewing class policies and procedures. What happens if you are tardy? How many bathroom passes do you get a semester? What happens to unused passes? How does each day begin? Be specific! What should you do if you are absent? Do I accept late work? How do you access my website? How are you assessed in this class?

BELLWORK: Why study history? Although history is a study of the past, it is so much more than memorization of names and dates! For bellwork today, I want you to think about the benefits of studying history and why it’s important. On the “why study history” handout, read the six justifications for studying history. Rank them 1 to 6 for what YOU think is the most/least significant reasons to study history.... Give this serious thought! Also answer the “thinker” question at the bottom. Be ready to discuss and share your answers!

Intro to World History

Writing Assignment: Personal History Today, you will begin a writing pre-assessment on your personal history. Think of this as an autobiography…..what might you include? Get out a blank sheet of paper: Write any helpful instructions, guidelines, etc. Due MONDAY  20 points! This will be used as a pre-assessment of your writing skills, style and level.

A Personal History Who are you? In a 1 page response, tell me about your personal history. Think about what is included in an autobiography. You may want to address: Your parents Early Childhood School Years Hobbies, Interests & favorites Any fun/interesting facts or stories An event that has had the MOST impact on your life Goals and aspirations for the future

Discussion Activity: Intro to World History Our study of history is more than dates and events – we will also learn about other cultures & geography. To discuss how geography & cultures contribute to world history, you will now participate in a discussion activity. Discussion is key in this class, so I expect everyone to participate! You may take turns sharing your opinion, brainstorm together, and/or ask follow up questions, etc. To start, everyone will get up and move around the room. When the music stops, find a partner and discuss the question on the board. You will have one minute to discuss the question with your partner before you move on to the next question. Follow my pacing. You may not discuss with the same person twice. Try and introduce yourself to someone new! After the four partner discussions, we will discuss these aspects as a class, so be ready to share your thoughts!

What is culture? What aspects of a person’s life contribute to their “culture?”

Why is it important to understand and study other cultures Why is it important to understand and study other cultures? Why do you think we study culture in history class?

What makes peoples’ cultures different from one another What makes peoples’ cultures different from one another? (For example, consider geography  why is American culture different from Asia, Europe, etc?) Can you think of cultural practices that may be different between regions of the world?

What is “culture shock?” Why might it be hard to adapt to another culture? Have you experienced this?

Geography Pre-Assessment Geography is an important subject which helps your understanding of history. Throughout this course, you will study and be tested on several regions of the world. Today, I want to see what you already know! You will now take a pre-assessment map quiz that challenges you to identify 30 important countries of study. This is NOT a grade, but I want to see what you know, so give it your best effort!!! You will get a completion grade. When you are finished, continue working on your personal history.
