1 Unit 1 The History of Earth Overview and Unit Guide

2 Unit 1 Overview The history of the Earth Covers 4.6 Billion years.
Earth scientists use the structure, sequence, and properties of rocks, sediments, and fossils, as well as locations of current and past ocean basins, lakes, and rivers, to reconstruct events in Earth's planetary history. Significant changes have occurred over that much time.

3 Things you need to know The Theory of Plate Tectonics
Where the Earth and the Moon come from. How old the Earth is. How old the continents and the oceans are. How the atmosphere has changed over time. Geologic Time: How it is divided up. Major events in Earth’s History. The Oxygen and Nitrogen Cycle. How extinction is an important process in evolution.

4 Math Skill Builders Grading is based on which of the three options you pick. Your choice will affect your options on future work as will your grade. It is due at the beginning of class two classes from now and will be posted on the board. Please do not hand anything in late. 8 Experimental Critique Exercise
Today you will be critiquing four experiments that were designed by other people. All of the experiments have one or more significant problems. Read the check list on what is a good experiment and then find the problems with the four experiments. Fix each of the problems. This is practice for when you are starting to design your own models and experiments. Grading is for participation and 100 to 0 for grade.

9 Student Presentation Assignments
Today you are getting your first presentation assignments. I will assign your group a topic based on how well your are doing so far. As a group you may choose which format you want to do. 12 Station Lab Day 1 Today you will be developing your first model of a process or lab experience. You will also be doing the different stations set about the room to give you some ideas. This lab takes two days but try and get the station work done today. Grading is standard Part. 100 to 0 grade.

13 Do Now 3 This video has several important facts. Answer these questions in your do now sheet or notebook. What is the main idea of the video? What are 5 important facts related to the main idea?

You may look at samples online if you don’t have a good idea of what a timeline should look like. Due next class. Standard Grading part. 100 to 0 grade.

20 Radiometric Data Lab 1 Today you are modeling half-life.
All radioactive materials decay to non radioactive products eventually. Read the directions and complete the data collection part of the lab today. If you need more time to finish the charts you can complete them for homework and hand them in next class. Standard Grading part. 100 to 0 grade.

21 Biogeochemical Cycles and Life
Today we are review two of the most important biogeochemical cycles. Read the two hand outs alone or in groups of up to four. We are going over all the questions together after I check yours are done. Participation 4-2-0

22 Student Presentation Due Now!

In your own words, why are the continents older than the ocean? How is geological time similar and different than standard units of time? In your own words, why is extinction an important part of evolution? Pick two and write the question. Hand in in 40 minutes. To be graded as class work. No collaboration, everyone does their own paper.
