Ch. 18 Classification Taxonomy – science of classifying organisms. Taxonomist = someone who classifies organisms. Aristotle – Greek scientists (300 B.C.) First taxonomist

The 1st classification was based on where the organism lived. 1. Air dwellers 2. Land dwellers 3. Water dwellers Linnaeus – Swedish nautralist Developed the Modern System of Taxonomy 7 Levels of Classification

Canis familiaris (dog) What are they? Kingdom – Phylum/Division – Class – Order – Family – Genus – Specific Epithet Binomial Nomenclature Genus & Specific Epithet Underline both Canis familiaris (dog)

Why use scientific names? 1. Used worldwide Written in latin (dead language) 2. Avoid common name confusion 3. Both are underlined for easy recognition.

Human Classification Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Primates Family: Hominidae Genus: Homo Specific Epithet: sapiens

5 Kingdoms 1. Animalia - 2. Plantae 3. Protista 4. Fungi 5. Monera

Phylogeny – evolutionary history of a species Phylogenetic tree – diagram that shows the evolutionary relationship among organisms. Dichotomous key – set of choices that leads to the name of the organism Key out an organism according to its characteristics.
