Taxonomy: the study of identification, naming, and classification of species EQ: Why do scientists classify organisms? Is a Virus alive?

2 History of Taxonomy Carl Linnaeus: devised the current system of classification. He used binomial nomenclature which is a system of using 2 names to label species. The scientific name consists of the Genus and species. The Genus is always capitalized EX: Homo sapiens, modern man EQ: Why do scientists classify organisms? Is a Virus alive?

3 Hierarchical Classification
Each species is grouped into progressively broader categories Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus species EQ: Why do scientists classify organisms? Is a Virus alive?
