Militarism The buildup of a country’s armed forces. There were arms races between the countries in Europe to see who could have the biggest, most powerful military.

Alliance An agreement between 2 or more countries to help each other during a conflict. Countries in Europe were forming alliances, to protect each other in case of an attack.

Nationalism Extreme pride in your country. Every country in Europe wanted to be the best and most powerful. Everyone wanted to be independent.

Imperialism The domination of one country by another country. When a stronger country takes over a weaker country. Before WWI, European countries were competing to see who could control the most land and have the biggest empire.

Assassination The archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a man from Serbia named Gavrilo Princip. The assassin was a nationalist who wanted Serbia to be free of Austria-Hungary’s imperialist rule.
