Scheduling 101 A Guide to Scheduling Pre-AP & AP classes An overview for potential Pre-AP(Honors) & AP students

What is the Advanced Studies Diploma? The Advanced Studies Diploma is the highest academic honor offered at DHS. The benefits include earning college credit, increasing your ACT scores, and sitting on stage at graduation. Advanced Studies Diploma REQUIREMENTS Pass 18 Pre-AP and AP classes with a grade of C or better. 4 Pre-AP & AP English classes 4 Pre-AP & AP Math classes 4 Pre-AP & AP Science classes 4 Pre-AP & AP Social Studies classes 2 additional Pre-AP & AP classes of your choice Earn an overall 85 B average in all Pre-AP and AP classes. Remember : You MUST start this journey in 9th-grade.

Who can apply for Pre-AP classes? ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS To enroll in a Pre-AP class at the freshman level, a student should … submit the Intent to Enroll form secure recommendations from two core teachers. have earned an A or a B in the preceding class. have a core GPA of 3.0. submit a writing sample. Remember : THIS IS A FULL YEAR COMMITMENT!

What are my choices? Choice 1: Take Pre-AP and AP classes in your area(s) of strength and/or interest. Students can take 1, 2, 3, or 4 Pre-AP courses. Choices include: Pre-AP English 1, Pre-AP Geometry, Pre-AP Physical Science, and Pre-AP Civics. Choice 2: Pursue the Advanced Studies Diploma. If a 9th-grader is in Algebra 1 in and wants to take all honors, he/she must also take Pre-AP Geometry in 9th grade.

Sample 9th-grade Pre-AP schedule Fall 1. Pre-AP English 1 2. Algebra 1 or other elective 3. Pre-AP Civics 4. PE 1 Spring 1. Band or another elective 2. Pre-AP Geometry 3. Pre-AP Physical Science 4. Independent Study (gifted only) or another elective Additional electives: Electives for 9th-graders are somewhat limited and are listed in the DHS Course Catalog. Some suggestions are listed below: Spanish 1 or French 1 (Students in 4 honors classes can start foreign language studies in 9th grade.) Basic Drafting Choir IBCA Art 1 Family and Consumer Sciences General Tech Talented Visual Arts Talented Drama Journey to Careers (If NOT in 4 honors classes)

How do I apply for Pre-AP classes? The application process: 1. Obtain the Intent to Enroll form from your middle school or the DHS counselors. 2. Carefully read the cover letter to understand the process. 3. Complete the one-page application. Select the classes in which you want to enroll. Sign the Commitment Oath on the application. If you are applying for honors English, make a copy of a writing sample to include with your application packet. Submit a copy of your most recent report card. Submit all components TOGETHER to DHS by May 5, 2017. Give the teacher recommendation forms to your teachers in a timely manner. The recs will be returned directly to DHS.

How do I apply for Pre-AP classes? At registration: Select the Pre-AP classes in which you intend to enroll and complete all necessary parts of the application. In early May: The Advanced Studies Team will review applications, recommendations, writing samples, and grades. In late May: Placement letters will be mailed home. 1. Complete an Advanced Studies Intent to Enroll form at registration. 2. Submit all materials by MAY 5, 2017.
