Instrument Family - Woodwinds Music Appreciation - Notebook Section A - Sept 20, 2018

Woodwind Characteristics: *Vibrations begin when air is blown across the top of an instrument, across a single reed, or across two reeds. *Reeds are small pieces of cane. A single reed is clamped to a mouthpiece at the top of the instrument and vibrates against the mouthpiece when air is blown between the reed and the mouthpiece. *Two reeds tied together are commonly known as a double reed. This double reed fits into a tube at the top of the instrument and vibrates when air is forced between the two reeds.

Piccolo ♫ Highest instrument in the woodwind family ♫ Smaller version of the flute ♫ Made of silver or wood ♫ Sound is made when air is blown across the mouthpiece "Stars & Stripes" Piccolo Solo

Flute ♫ One of the highest instruments in the woodwind family ♫ Used to be made of wood (and vertical, the “recorder”) but now it is made of silver or gold ♫ About 2 feet in length ♫ Sound is made when air is blown across the mouthpiece "Titanic" Recorder & Flute Solos

Clarinet ♫ Made from wood ♫ Has a single reed attached to the mouthpiece ♫ Sound is made when the reed vibrates against the mouthpiece when the player blows into the mouthpiece ♫ Player changes notes by pressing the metal keys in different combinations "Lean On" Clarinet Solo

Bass Clarinet ♫ One of the lower members of the clarinet family ♫ Made from wood ♫ Has a single reed attached to the mouthpiece ♫ Sound is made when the reed vibrates against the mouthpiece when the player blows into the mouthpiece "All of Me" Bass Clarinet Solo

Oboe ♫ Similar to the clarinet because they both are made of wood and have metal keys ♫ Does not have a mouthpiece ♫ Has a double reed (two pieces of bamboo cane tied together) ♫ Sound is made by the vibrating pieces of bamboo when the player blows through the reed "Cake by the Ocean" Oboe Solo

English Horn ♫ Lower version of the oboe ♫ Made of wood with metal keys ♫ Has a double reed (two pieces of bamboo cane tied together) ♫ Has a bocal (curved tube) that attaches the double reed to the instrument ♫ Sound is made by the vibrating pieces of bamboo when the player blows through the reed "Final Fantasy IX" English Horn Solo

Bassoon ♫ Large and lower member of the woodwind family ♫ Made of wood with metal keys ♫ Has a double reed (two pieces of bamboo cane tied together) ♫ Has a bocal that attaches the double reed to the instrument ♫ Sound is made by the vibrating pieces of bamboo when the player blows through the reed "Somebody that I Used to Know" by Bassoon Quartet

Contra Bassoon ♫ Lower version of the bassoon ♫ Made of wood with metal keys ♫ Has a double reed (two pieces of bamboo cane tied together) ♫ Has a bocal that attaches the double reed to the instrument ♫ Sound is made by the vibrating pieces of bamboo when the player blows through the reed "All About that Bass" - The Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet

Saxophone ♫ Made of brass ♫ Has a single reed attached to the mouthpiece ♫ Not usually found in the orchestra but counted as a woodwind instrument because of the single reed ♫ Sound is made when the reed vibrates against the mouthpiece when the player blows into the mouthpiece "Uptown Funk" by Cannonball Band
