Introduction to Course Transformations and Translations Unit 1 – Day 1 Standard Introduction to Course Transformations and Translations

8.25.2014 Please read the syllabus you have received. It is your job to familiarize yourself with the policies and expectations of this class

All course information will be posted there. Welcome to M2 Standard My website: www.cwilson3khs.pbworks.com All course information will be posted there. Check the site often! For an extra 5 points on your first homework grade take the survey about my website before FRIDAY 8.29.2014 at 3:30pm. Read through my website before taking the survey – there are questions about my site that must be correct to receive credit! The link to the survey is under today’s homework assignment. Beginning course details and/or books/materials needed for a class/project.

Units to be covered in Math 2: - Transformations Quadratic Functions Exponential Functions Advanced Functions Trigonometric Functions Probability

Classroom Expectations: RESPECT yourself, others, and your school at all times Take responsibility for your learning and your actions Be physically and mentally prepared for class (have supplies, be on time, be attentive and cooperative) Consume food and beverages in the cafeteria only Comply with all KHS and Wake County policies ** We will be following the school policy of 3 strikes your out. **Electronic devices will be conficated at all times. I will follow the “Bag it and Tag It” policy.

Supplies 3-Ring Binder with Notebook paper Dividers Pencils Recommended: TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator If you cannot purchase one, there is a way to download a graphing calculator to your desktop computer. Go to my website for directions. We only have a few calculators from the school, if you do not purchase your own you will be required to share with your neighbor!!

Grading Quarter Grades: Tests and Projects: 50% Quizzes: 25% Class work: 15% Homework: 10% Semester Grades: 1st Quarter: 40% 2nd Quarter: 40% Final Exam: 20% State Test – “NC Final Exam” Tests: at the end of each unit Projects: 4 this semester, 2 each quarter Quizzes: most units will have 1 quiz Class Work: 2-5 times per week Homework: NIGHTLY

Tests and Projects (50%) Each unit will have a test 6 tests for the semester

Quizzes (25%) Each unit will have approximately 2-4 quizzes. Quizzes CANNOT be retaken. Quiz grades will be replaced with the unit test grade if the test is higher, otherwise the quiz grade will stay. If you are absent on quiz day, the quiz will be taken on the day you return – no exceptions!

Class work (15%) Class work can be graded for accuracy or for completion. Any class work graded for accuracy can be recompleted if you are not satisfied with original grade for up to an 85%.

Everyone starts out at a 100 Homework (10%) Homework will be graded based off of a full credit, half credit, or no credit system. Everyone starts out at a 100 Full credit receives a √ (keep your 100) Half credit receives a √- (-5 points for each assignment at half credit) No credit receives X (-10 points for each assignment not done)

You are out = YOUR RESPONSIBLILITY to get make-up work. Get class notes from a neighbor or from the website Office Hours Monday afternoons 3:15 - 4:15 Room 2608

Warm- Up Formatting Take out a 1sheet of paper and fold into four parts. You will use one section of your paper for each day of the week. Friday will be completed on the back of your warm-up sheet for the week! (unless a short week).

Warm – Up 1 8.24.2014 Each pair/group has been given one worksheet of matching shapes. The solid figures are the original and the dotted figures are the second figure after some change have been made. Match each letter with the correct number and describe the movement - being as specific as possible. Write your answers for #1-4 on day 1 of your warm-up paper!

Unit 1: Transformations Essential Question #1 and #2 1. Why are only four types of transformations needed to describe the motion of a figure? 2. How can coordinates be used to describe a sliding motion or translation? **Essential Questions need to be written down and answered (using complete sentences). EQs are due TEST DAY!

In this lesson, you will learn how coordinates can be used to transform shapes. You will investigate coordinate representation of rigid transformations that provide a way to reposition figures in a plane without changing the shape or the size of the figures.

Transformations Definition: A Transformation is a change in the position, size, or shape of a geometric figure.

Translation Definition: A Translation (slide) is a transformation that moves points the same distance and in the same direction. A translation in the coordinate plane is described by a vector.

Preimage and Image The preimage is the original figure. Denoted as A The image is the figure after a transformation. Denoted as A’ or “A prime” (This is called Prime Notation)

Group Work A translation, or sliding motion, is determined by distance and direction. By looking carefully at a simple shape and its translated image, you can discover patterns relating the coordinates of the shape and the coordinates of its image. In pairs/groups complete page 1 of your packet. Page title: “Unit 1 – Day 1: Translations”

Develop a General Rule In pairs, write a general rule that tells how to take any point (the preimage) (x, y) and translate it horizontally h units and vertically k units to find its image. Think about the symbolic form from the investigation: (x,y)  (____, ____) .

(x, y)  (x + h, y + k) General Rule Describes a translation of h horizontal units (+ Right, - Left) k vertical units (+ Up, - Down)

Vector Notation Vector notation is another way to write rules of translations. A vector is written as h  -h = left +h = right k  - k = down +k = up

Example 1 Write a description and rule for the following translation *Hint: the Translated Image is Always has the Prime notation

Homework Complete pages 2 and 3 in packet! First Quiz: Friday 8.29.2014 Second Quiz: Tuesday 9.9.2014 First Test: Thursday 9.11.2014
