American History Challenge This Union Civil War general was the first West Point graduate to become president of the United States. He became the union hero of the Civil War. OBJECTIVES Locate the battles of the Civil War on student map. Identify important battles of the Civil War. Research a battle of the Civil War to share with the class.

Journal Activity What were the advantages of the Union and Confederate armies? How did these advantages effect the strategies each army had during the war?

Major Battles of the Civil War Fort Sumter- start of the Civil War First Battle of Bull Run- Confederate victory dashed the union hopes of a quick end to the war. Seven Days’ Battle- Union retreat from Richmond Second Battle of Bull Run- Union forces pushed out of Virginia Battle of Antietam- Union won a key victory, which led to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Battle of Shiloh- Grant gains control of the Mississippi River Valley Siege of Vicksburg- Union gain control of the Mississippi splitting the Confederacy in half.
