2. Fort Sumter Confederates fired the first shots of the first battle of the war. Confederates took the fort with 4,000 rounds of artillery. This event united the North, and many people volunteered for the Union Army.

3. The Anaconda Plan The Union’s strategy to win the war The Union would blockade Southern ports The Union Army would move down the Mississippi River to split the South in two. The Union would capture the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia.

4. Early Civil War Battles The battle of Bull Run First bloody battle of the war. The Union tried to capture Richmond. Confederates won. Forts Henry and Donelson Northern victories at Confederate forts. Shiloh General Grant’s Union forces won a small victory. This battle showed that the Anaconda Plan might be working.

5. The War for the Capitals: Richmond The North unsuccessfully fought to take control of Richmond, VA again. General Robert E. Lee’s leadership of Confederate forces fought off the Northern Army.

6. The War for the Capitals: Antietam Lee and the Confederates wanted to take the capital of the North. Lee’s forces moved to the Northern state of Maryland and fought with Union troops at Antietam. This was the bloodiest day of war in U.S. history. 26,000 casualties in one day. A Draw.

7. The Experience of Soldiers In your textbooks, read pages 323 -327, Soldiers Suffer on Both Sides. In pairs, role play a soldier and his close relative and write a letter to each other from their viewpoints. Examples: Soldier, Wife, Mother, Prisoner, Father, Son, etc… Use information from our notes and the chapter.
