WorkSafe Victoria http://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/ Roles and Responsibilities WorkSafe Victoria http://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/ The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (the Act) is the cornerstone of legislative and administrative measures to improve occupational health and safety in Victoria. Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 are made under the Act.  They specify the ways duties imposed by the Act must be performed, or prescribe procedural or administrative matters to support the Act, such as requiring licenses for specific activities, keeping records, or notifying certain matters. Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Compliance Framework Handbook, 2007 Compliance Codes provide practical guidance to duty holders (compliance with the Act)- Codes of Practices Vic Govt supports national harmonization in principle but has not adopted WHS AHCCHM101A - Follow Basic Safety Rules - Chemwatch Training 4/1/2017

Activity 1.4 Confined Space Safe Operating Procedure in Confined Space Organisational Procedures are followed with regards to chemicals Confined Space    A confined space is determined by the structure and a specific set of circumstances. The same structure may or may not be a confined space depending on the circumstances when the space is entered. Entry to a confined space is considered to have occurred when a person’s head or upper body enters the space. A space may become a confined space if work that is to be carried out in the space would generate harmful concentrations of airborne contaminants.   Safe Operating Procedure in Confined Space Company A has hired services to re-paint in a confined space. The work is being conducted in a confined space and the work environment in this space contains harmful atmosphere. The safe operating procedure for this space requires that A safe atmosphere can be achieved within the confined space using methods such as cleaning, purging and ventilation. Assume that the atmosphere has been cleared of contaminants. Determine what is cold be missing in this picture. 4/1/2017 AHCCHM101A - Follow Basic Safety Rules - Chemwatch Training

Protect the worker: Provide personal protection to the worker to prevent physical contact with the chemical. These principles are discussed in detail below. Elimination and Substitution are the control options of choice and must be considered Engineering controls including isolation may be acceptable but must be used with caution The use of PPE as a sole risk control or even PPE and Administrative Controls is a STOP (not acceptable) AHCCHM101A - Follow Basic Safety Rules - Chemwatch Training 4/1/2017

Chemical Handling & Storage Instructions Segregation Class Segregation Guidance Notes S1 Segregate these goods by 3m or more in a well-ventilated area. For liquid dangerous goods the distance is measured from the edge of the spill catchment area. See supplementary notes 6 and 7. S2 Segregate by 5 m or more. If one of the dangerous goods is a liquid, measure the distance from the edge of the spill catchment area. Liquid dangerous goods should be located within a separate spill catchment area. See supplementary notes 6 and 7. S3 Segregate by 3 m or more for PG III goods and 5m or more for PG II, PG I goods or where the goods may react dangerously. If both are solids then a minimum of 1m separation may be used. Where one of the goods is a liquid the distance is measured from the edge of the spill catchment area. See supplementary notes 6 and 7. S4 Segregation preferred by the use of fire-rated partitioned areas. Consider use of separate detached building for organic peroxides and for highly pyrophoric class 4.2 goods. S5 Segregation of class 4.3 preferred by use of a separate, detached building without water based fire suppression system. 4/1/2017 AHCCHM101A - Follow Basic Safety Rules - Chemwatch Training

Types of PPEs Type of PPE What are they? Caution…! Clothing Long sleeved shirt, long trousers made of water repellent material. Overalls, waterproof apron, rain coat, rain suit can be used when mixing or pouring concentrates. Overalls do not provide adequate protection against spills and splashes Gloves Elbow length, unlined water proof gloves. Only use gloves approved for the chemical or product as some rubber products can be reactive with solvents and dissolve. Read the label or (M)SDS Shoes/Boots Boots must be made of rubber. Trouser bottoms must be worn outside of boots. Leather, canvas or cloth boots must not be worn when handling chemicals due their absorbency Goggles/Face Shields Tight fitting and non-fogging goggles or full face shield must be worn to avoid eyes contamination or if there’s a possibility of a splash. Avoid eye contact Take caution when using dusts, powder or toxic spray Glasses Wear glasses to avoid eye contact. Contact lenses can trap material beneath, hence increasing the risk of poisoning Respirators Select the respirator that is solely designed for its intended use Understand the limitations of the respirator type Always use manufacturer’s instructions on use and maintenance.
