Thomas Jefferson

Jefferson Defeats Adams Although Adams ran as Jefferson’s main opponent, running mates Jefferson and Burr received the same number of electoral votes. Jefferson and Burr made a deal: if Burr was willing to be Jefferson’s Vice President, Burr’s votes would swing to Jefferson in the House.

The Third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson became President and Aaron Burr became Vice President. The deadlock in this election revealed a flaw – Congress passed he 12th amendment, calling for electors to pass separate ballots for president and vice president.

Jefferson’s Domestic Policies Tried to “shrink” the government and cut costs: Reduced the size of the army Stopped an expansion of the navy Lowered expenses for government functions Eliminated internal taxes and reduced the influence of the Bank of the United States
