2 Do Now: Election of 1800 What was the result of the election of 1800?

3 Election of 1800 A. Jefferson ran against Aaron Burr in the Election of 1800 Both received the same number of Electoral College votes- neither earned a majority. The House of Representatives would decide the outcome of this contest. Jefferson became president and Burr became VP.

4 B. Deadlock revealed a flaw
Congress passed 12th amendment which called for electors to cast separate ballots for president and vice-president Still is in effect today.

Election of 1800 John Adams – Federalist = 65 Thomas Jefferson – Dem./Repub.=73 Aaron Burr - Dem./Repub. = 73 There was a tie in the Electoral College between Burr & Jefferson at 73 votes each. When there is a tie the House of Representatives votes to break the tie. After 36 votes in the House, Jefferson is declared the winner & becomes President.

6 I. Domestic Policies A. As the first Democratic-Republican President, Jefferson promised to make government more responsible to the ordinary citizen instead of protecting the rich.

7 B. Some Jefferson domestic policies included:
Repealed the Whiskey Tax. 2. Let the Alien & Sedition Acts expire o Citizens jailed under acts were freed o Allowed immigrants to gain citizenship after 5 years in the U.S. 3. Laissez Faire policy – the government should not interfere in people’s lives * Reduced number of people in government and made the navy smaller *Believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution

8 B. Louisiana Purchase caused a constitutional dilemma for Jefferson
Unable to purchase territory using strict interpretation of Constitution Jefferson decided for a loose interpretation and purchased the territory 3. Purchased land from Napoleon (France) for $15 million in 1803; which France had just received back from Spain 4. Purchase doubles size of the US (Lewis & Clark explore territory)

11 II. Lewis and Clark A. 1804: Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from St. Louis in 1804 to explore the newly acquired lands and to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean. First they reached the Columbia River and finally the Pacific Ocean This expedition encouraged heightened the US desire to acquire land connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean

Embargo Act 0f 1807 Caused by British impressment of American merchant ships Jefferson’s responded to British impressment with an embargo (ban on trade with other nations) on American goods to Europe Embargo hurt US shipbuilders and New England merchants Jefferson’s popularity suffers
