Performance Achievement a quick reference guide to SETTING OBJECTIVES My name is Wini Ryan from Leadership, Education and Talent Development I would like to present to you a quick reference guide to…

PERFORMANCE ACHIEVEMENT Setting Objectives When setting your objectives, consider – What you want to achieve (Objectives) How you are going to do it (Methodology) How will you know it is achieved (Outcomes) There are three stages to consider when you are setting your objectives – What you want to achieve - your objectives How you are going to do it - the methodology How will you know it is achieved – your Outcomes

SETTING OBJECTIVES 1. What you want to achieve (Objectives) When your setting your objectives consider what you want to achieve for yourself, the service and the teams you are involved with. Then consider what actions you can take to assist you in achieving your objectives In setting your objective you need consider the following context:   Legislation and Policy The Corporate Plan The National Service Plan, and Operational Plans

SETTING OBJECTIVES 1. What you want to achieve (Objectives) In your own words develop three or four objectives that you can deliver within the Performance Achievement year and note these down. Your objectives should–   Be challenging, stretching you to deliver meaningful results Be achievable within the twelve month timeframe of the Performance Achievement cycle Complement and align with the objectives of your role, the responsibilities of your team and your organisational objectives You will later need to agree these with your team leader / line manager so remember, your objectives must be ones directly related to your present role and responsibilities.

SETTING OBJECTIVES 1. What you want to achieve (Objectives) When considering your long term development within the Health Service, a Personal Development Plan (PDP) can be extremely helpful. A discussion with your line manager/team leader can also be useful.

SETTING OBJECTIVES 2. How you are going to do it (Methodology) Care We will provide care that is the highest quality We will deliver evidence based best practice We will listen to the views and opinions of our patients and service users and consider them in how we plan and deliver our services Compassion We show respect, kindness, consideration and empathy in our communication and interaction with people We will be courteous and open in our communication with people and recognise their fundamental worth We will provide services with dignity and demonstrate professionalism at all times Trust We will provide services in which people have confidence We will be open and transparent in how we provide services We will show honesty, integrity, consistency and accountability in decisions and actions Learning We will foster learning, innovation and creativity We will support and encourage our workforce to achieve their full potential We will acknowledge when something is wrong, apologise for it, take corrective action and learn from it In discussion with your line manager/team leader describe on your Performance Achievement form how you will achieve each of your objectives in a manner that –   Complements our Values of Care; Compassion; Trust and Learning Clearly identifies and describes the steps that you will take to achieve your objectives If the achievement of your objectives may be adversely affected by an event or occurrence outside of your control, then describe this risk on the Performance Achievement documentation.

SETTING OBJECTIVES 3. How will you know it is achieved (Outcomes)   Finally consider how you will know when you have achieved your objectives. Note the measures or outcomes for each of the objectives that you want to achieve.

PERFORMANCE ACHIEVEMENT Setting Objectives OPTIMAL INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE ACHIEVEMENT So in Summary: when setting your objectives – Decide what it is you want to achieve (the Objectives) How to achieve your objectives in the right way (based on our Values) And consider if you have the correct skills and abilities required to achieve your objectives (Development) Get this balance right and you are well on your way to success
