Depth of Field

What is Depth of Field? Area of ACCEPTABLE FOCUS. How much is in focus in front of and behind your subject. Focal Point is the area of critical focus.

TYPES of Depth of Field SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD GREAT DEPTH OF FIELD

TYPES of Depth of Field NOTE: out of focus is not the same as Shallow DOF!

THREE VARIABLES THAT CONTROL DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF) APERTURE OPENING LENGTH OF LENS YOUR DISTANCE TO SUBJECT

THREE VARIABLES THAT CONTROL D.O.F. APERTURE OPENING SMALLER the aperture opening = _______ D.O.F. LARGER the aperture opening = ______ D.O.F.

SMALLER aperture opening LARGER aperture opening = GREATER D.O.F. LARGER aperture opening = SHALLOWER D.O.F.

THREE VARIABLES THAT CONTROL DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF) List the aperture range that will give you GREAT DEPTH OF FIELD.

THREE VARIABLES THAT CONTROL DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF) List the aperture range that will give you GREAT DEPTH OF FIELD. (F/11, F/16, F/22…)

THREE VARIABLES THAT CONTROL DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF) List the aperture range that will give you SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD.

THREE VARIABLES THAT CONTROL DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF) List the aperture range that will give you SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD. (F/1.8, F/2.8, F/4, F/5.6…)

THREE VARIABLES THAT CONTROL DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF)

2. FOCAL LENGTH OF LENS Shorter your lens focal length =more depth of field. **most of you have a 50mm lens, which is standard. You cannot change lens focal length without switching lenses.** 24mm (short lens) = immense depth of field. 400mm (long lens) = miniscule depth of field.

3. YOUR DISTANCE TO THE SUBJECT CLOSER you are to your subject, the less depth of field there will be. (SHALLOW) **50mm lens will not let you get closer than 18inches. FURTHER away you are from subject, the more depth of field you will have.(GREATER)
