1 Unit 57 – Photography Depth of field

2 The depth of field is a measure of how much of the scene is in sharp focus
Small aperture (f:22) = large depth of field Large aperture (f2.8) = small depth of field

3 Depth of field depends on…
The focal length of the lens How close the object is to the camera The aperture, or f:stop, being used

4 Telephoto lenses have a smaller depth of field than wide-angle lenses
200 mm Lens at f:2.8 28 mm lens at f:2.8

5 The depth of field gets smaller when the subject is close to the camera.

6 Smaller apertures (bigger f:numbers) have a greater depth of field than larger apertures (smaller f:numbers) f:16, f:11, f:8, f:5.6, f:4, f:2.8, f2 Large depth of field Small depth of field

7 Smaller apertures (bigger f:numbers) have a greater depth of field than larger apertures (smaller f:numbers) 50mm lens on f:2 50mm lens on f:16

8 Some lenses are marked with a depth of field scale
What will be in focus at f:16? What will be in focus at f:8? This 90mm lens is focused on 8 metres. At f:32, everything between 4m and infinity will be in focus.

9 This 35mm lens is focused on 1.6 metres. At f:22, everything between 0.8m and infinity will be in focus. What will be in focus at f:16? What will be in focus at f:8?

10 35mm wide-angle lens 90mm telephoto lens
What will be in focus at f:22 for each lens?
