How to capture attention with the Video Camera

There are 3 main ways that a filmmaker can draw attention to an item in a scene Focus Zoom Insert Shot

zoom Definition: a camera shot that changes smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfpb9GqYLiI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0ntFopAuV0

focus Definition: to bring to a focus or into focus: to focus the lens of a camera. The adjustment of an optical device n ecessary to produce a clear image: in focus; out of focus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1OudiIsMk8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXXr0N2tdpA

Insert Shot or Extreme Close Up Definition: Shot of some small but significant detail in a scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsUxVJufiUI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsTClmeUxsE

What influences the zoom, focus and insert shot? Lens type Focal length (focal range) Aperture (the amount of light the lens allows in) Types of lenses: Standard/Normal Lens-what the human eye sees Wide Angle Lens-captures more of the background but has less of an ability to zoom. Zoom Lens-Can zoom in and out a wide range but captures less of the background. Depth of Field-is the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph.

Shallow Depth of Field An example of a shallow depth of field effect for close up as the distracting background is "thrown" out of focus to draw the viewer's attention to the main subject. Next, remember we discussed earlier:- the nearer of the subject in focus to your camera, depth of field will be more "shallow".

Maximum Depth of Field This is the OPPOSITE. Maximum depth of field is required to show the details of the scene that attracted my interest and so, if I want to show the entire scope of the scene from NEAR to FAR in sharp focus. A smaller aperture is used along with a wide angle lens to achieve the objective.

How do you zoom, focus and film and insert shot? Switch the camera from auto to manual (this will allow you to focus the camera yourself without the camera automatically adjusting itself). Turning the knobs The inside knob effects the zoom The outer knob effects the focus Distance from the object Remember-the closer you are to the object the less in focus everything behind it is. Changing Lenses (we will get to this as needed)

Practice In small groups I want each person to try to focus and zoom on an object See handout for directions
