Present Progressive When you want to emphasize that an activity is happening RIGHT NOW, use the present progressive tense.

Present progressive is the equivalent of the form in English -ING The dogs are playing with the toy. You are driving too slowly! I am talking on the phone. He is reading the instructions. Ana is taking pictures.

Present progressive is a compound verb, which means that the verbs is actually made up of two words.

To form the present progressive tense, use the present tense of ESTAR and a present participle: ESTAR – To be + Present Participle Estoy Estamos For –AR verbs: add –ANDO Estás Estáis For –ER verbs: add –IENDO Está Están For –IR verbs: add –IENDO

Present Participles = -ING DUCHAR COMER ESCRIBIR DUCH ANDO AR COM IENDO ER ESCRIB IENDO IR showering eating writing

They fall into two groups. The participles we will use in this chapter are irregular and will require a spelling change. They fall into two groups.

For –IR stem-changing verbs, the “E” changes to “I” and the “O” changes to “U”: SENTIR MORIR DECIR SENT SINT IENDO IR MOR MUR IENDO IR DEC DIC IENDO IR saying/telling feeling dying Other –IR stem-changing verbs include: Repetir, preferir, vestirse, pedir, seguir, servir, competir, despedir, sugerir, reír, mentir, sonreír, and dormir.

Other verbs that have this change include: caer(se), destruir and oír. For –ER and –IR verbs whose stem ends in a vowel, the “I” in –IENDO will change to “Y”: LEER TRAER CREER CRE IENDO ER YENDO LE YENDO IENDO ER TRA YENDO IENDO ER thinking / believing reading bringing Other verbs that have this change include: caer(se), destruir and oír.

Don’t forget - if there’s a __________ ____________ in the sentence, the direct object pronoun gets _________ to the verb. PRESENT PARTICIPLE ATTACHED LO Susi y Mari están escribiendo ahora. el cheque Susi y Mari están ___ ahora. escribiendo escribiéndo LO Participle Object Pronoun When you attach to the end of the participle, you add a syllable to the word, which messes with the natural stress. HOWEVER… The participle will need a written accent over the “A” in –ANDO or the “E” in –IENDO or –YENDO. THEREFORE…

So… what do you remember? When you do use the present progressive? When you want to say what is happening right now. How do you form the present progressive? Conjugate ESTAR in present tense and add a present participle. What is the participle ending for –AR verbs? For –ER/-IR verbs? -ANDO and -IENDO What type of infinitive has a stem-changing participle? A stem-changing –IR verb Give an example of a participle that ends in –YENDO. LEYENDO, CREYENDO, OYENDO, TRAYENDO, DESTRUYENDO and CAYENDO
