What is Athena SWAN? Recognising advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success for all. Launched in 2005 Mainstreamed in 2011, when the Chief Medical Officer announced NIHR would only expect to shortlist Medical Schools for biomedical research centre and unit funding if the school holds a Silver Athena SWAN award. There are currently 143 Athena SWAN members, holding 617 awards between them. In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women. In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and Law, and in professional support roles, and for trans staff an students. Re-apply
