World’s Shortest IQ Test -Get out a sheet of paper.

1. A bat and a ball cost $1. 10 in total. The bat costs $1 1. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? 2. If it takes five machines five minutes to make five widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets? 3. In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

1. 10 cents 2. 100 minutes 3. 24 days

1. The ball would actually cost 0.05 pence If the ball costs X, and the bat costs £1 more, then it will be: X+£1 Therefore Bat+ball=X + (X+1) =1.1 Thus 2X+1=1.1, and 2X=0.1 X= 0.05

It would take 5 minutes to make 100 widgets.  Five machines can make five widgets in five minutes; therefore one machine will make one widget in five minutes too. Therefore if we have 100 machines all making widgets, they can make 100 widgets in five minutes.

3. It would take 47 days for the patch to cover half of the lake If the patch doubles in size each day going forward, it would halve in size going backwards. So on day 47, the lake is half full.

Registration This will take place on Friday, December 1st. The packets must be filled out prior to coming to the registration. CSCC could only come at 9:00, so we apologize if the students are called out of your classes. Please allow them to leave for a few minutes to get everything settled with their DE courses for the Spring. Also, I wanted to clarify that any student wanting to take a DE course and has not yet taken a DE course, MUST complete a packet and come to registration. In addition, just because a student took a DE course this semester, does not mean they are automatically rolled over to thenext semester for CSCC.  If there is a student that wants to pick up a DE course and was not in one this semester, you can send them during either session. They must have a packet completed as well. If you have any questions please let me know! Thanks!

Five Steps to Historical Research 1. Getting Organized for Research 2. Selecting a Topic 3. Historical Research Background Reading Gathering and Recording Information Analyzing and Interpreting Sources 4. Developing a Thesis 5. Developing a History Day Final Project

NHD Theme Narrative: Read Place packet in binder

Rubric   15 sources or more 25 The annotations for each source must explain how you used the source and how it helped you understand your topic. 20 Separated into Primary and Secondary Sources 10 Correct grammar Correct and consistent format Variety of sources, a good balance between primary and secondary sources

A note on sources I am not aware of a specific number of sources, but I do know they should have a balanced number of sources using both primary and secondary.  Also when I am judging entries I prefer to see sources that are not only electronic/online.  Also the use of unpublished sources that have been used from an archive/library that shows original research is always a plus.

FORMATTING 1. Your list should be titled “Annotated Bibliography.” Not "Bibliography," not "Works Cited". Put this title in the top center of your first page. 2. Divide your Annotated Bibliography into two sections, labeled "Primary Sources" and "Secondary Sources." In each section, entries should be alphabetized by the first word excluding “A,” “An,” and “The.” 3. Other key formatting instructions: Single-space each entry and skip one line between entries. All source citations are tabbed 1/2 inch (one tab) after the first line. URLs (web addresses) should NOT be hyperlinked.
