1 THIS WEEK IN HISTORY FAIR Monday, November 6, 2015 PDP World Studies

2 NAMING THE OBJECTIVE This week we are focusing on RESEARCH. The goal is for each individual/group to identify an appropriate range of reliable, academic, and age-appropriate sources. These sources will be collected together into an Annotated Bibliography using MLA format.

5 TODAY’S TOP 5 1.What type of sources should I be looking for? 2.Where can I look for sources? 3.What is MLA format? 4.How do I make my bibliography “Annotated”? 5.Formatting an Annotated Bibliography

6 #1. TYPES OF SOURCES  Range of Sources  Primary and Secondary  Books, Journals, Encyclopedias, Newspapers, etc.  Depth  Sources that will support each other  Detailed analysis of one aspect of topic  Reliable  Written and reviewed by experts  Appropriate for High School Students (not 3 rd graders)  BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU FIND ON THE INTERNET

TYPES OF SOURCES Five Types of Sources to Look for this Week 1.Historical Context  What was going on the World/United States/Illinois/Chicago before, during, and after the time period/event you are researching? 2.Surface Information  Find multiple sources that include factual information about your topic. 3.Primary Sources 4.Secondary Analysis 5.Real Live BOOKS!!  Believe it or not, NOT EVERYTHING IS ON THE INTERNET. Check out the books in the Lincoln Park Library.

WHERE TO LOOK 1.The Chicago History Section of the Lincoln Park Library 2.Reliable Internet Databases:  Chicago Encyclopedia  QUESTIA  Student Resources in Context  Library of Congress 3.Chicago-Specific Databases  Chicago Collections  Chicago Public Library 4.Visit Libraries and Museums  Local Chicago Public Library  DePaul University  Chicago History Museum

9 DEPENDING ON YOUR MEDIUM…. If you are considering a Documentary or Exhibit you also want to keep an eye out for other types of sources:  Visuals (images, graphs, timelines, maps, etc)  Interviews ** Remember that you will need to be able to CITE THEM ** Do not include Visuals in THIS Bibliography – Content Sources ONLY

10 #3. MLA FORMAT  Very specific manner in which sources should be documented in the Humanities  Make sure you follow the format, and always double check. Avoid common errors.  Yes, most websites have all the information you need – you just need to look for it. If it’s not there, How do you even know this is a reliable sources.  Avoid redundant entries. Use your common sense  Include access date for Online Sources  PRINT means you used a real live hard copy of a book – you held it in your hands. If you looked at it via a computer screen you did not view it in PRINT. Instead use WEB or the name of the database.  Do not include URLs that are more than one line.

11 #4. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY  SEE YOUR PACKET FOR THE FORMAT!!! What does an Annotated Bibliography look like? An annotated bibliography has two parts. The first part is the bibliography line, which should be written according to MLA format. The second part is the explanation paragraph. Together, both parts are known as an “entry”. The entries should be separated between primary and secondary sources, and organized in alphabetical order. How is an Annotated Bibliography Summary written? The annotation should include these elements and be written in paragraph form, about 3-5 sentences (No bullet points)  A sentence or two that describes the author’s credentials, purpose, and audience (Origin and Purpose)  A brief “capsule” summary of its content  A explanation of “why this source seems valuable and how you might use it (value)

13 #5 FORMATTING  Heading – include all group members names  Divide into Primary and Secondary Sources  Hanging Indent (it’s easy)  Alphabetical Order  12 pt font / Times New Roman / 1 inch Margins
