Latin American Revolutions: Haiti Today I will predict the impact of the slave revolt in Haiti on the rest of South America.

France & America’s Impact Translations of the Declaration of Independence traveled to Latin America Young creoles (like Simon Bolivar) traveled in Europe during the French Revolution Both of these inspired Latin America to talk of liberty and equality

Toussaint L’Ouverture L’Ouverture was a former slave who was self-educated Slaves began rebelling in Haiti in 1791 Toussaint commanded an army France, Spain & Britain fought against the slave armies

Revolution lasted 1791 - 1798 Fighting took more lives than any other revolution in the Americas By 1798 slavery was abolished and Toussaint’s forces controlled most of the island

Napoleon’s Influence In 1802 Napoleon’s army reconquered the island Captured Toussaint and took him back to France 1803 Yellow Fever destroyed army France surrenders Haiti declares itself independent

Latin American Revolutions: Mexico & Central America Today I will identify the key players in Mexico’s fight for independence.

Father Hidalgo Priest of a rural, poor parish Encouraged Mexicans to fight for independence Rallied behind him Went to Mexico City to protest but lost followers because he called for an end to slavery

Father Jose Morales Wanted to improve conditions for the majority of Mexicans, abolish slavery, and allow all men to vote Led rebel forces but was soon captured and killed

Back in Spain… In 1820 liberal Spanish citizens forced the king to create a constitution This caused fear for the colonies Agustin de Iturbide helped form armies that overthrew the Spanish viceroy

Central America Iturbide encouraged the rest of Central America to join the United Provinces of Central America Eventually this fell threw and the independent nations of Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador & Costa Rica were formed

Latin American Revolutions: South America Today I will examine the revolutions for independence in South America.

Simon Bolivar Spent time in Europe during the French Revolution Admired the freedom and liberty the French fought for

Venezuela Bolivar led troops to surprise the Spanish viceroyalty at Bogota Combined with other victories Bolivar was considered “The Liberator” when Venezuela was granted freedom in 1821

Jose de San Martin Born in Argentina but trained for the military in Europe Helped Argentina win freedom from Spain in 1816 Worked with Bolivar to continue to force Spain out of South America

Struggles The newly-formed nations struggled for power Eventually they split into separate, independent nations (Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, & Ecuador)

Brazil The Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil when Napoleon conquered Brazil Returned to Portugal but the king left his son, Dom Pedro Dom Pedro ended up becoming emperor of an independent Brazil when the people demanded a new constitution Freedom of the press, religion & elected legislature
