Atherosclerosis Insights By Morgan Picht & Helana Matlock

What is Atherosclerosis and why is it considered a heart disease? Atherosclerosis is a disease that causes plaque buildup in arteries which stops the oxygen blood flow throughout the body. Atherosclerosis can affect ANY artery in the body, as a result, different diseases may develop based on which arteries are affected.

Causes High Cholesterol Smoking High Blood Pressure Diabetes Obesity Bad Diet/Lack of exercise

Risk Factors Diabetics Smoker People suffering from obesity Elderly People suffering from chronic kidney disease

How can Atherosclerosis be prevented? There are many general ways to prevent atherosclerosis like; -physical activity -heart-healthy eating (like fruits and vegetables) -weight control +if you are a smoker, quitting smoking is a great idea (of course)

Is it reversible Yes, atherosclerosis is reversible. Doctors say if patient follows these rules, it is very likely the disease will be “reversed”= -smoking cessation -strict vegetation diet -regular physical activity -adequate stress management +Another way to reverse this disease is to get a heart transplant+
