2 What is Heart Disease? Heart disease is a general term that encompasses various disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels. The most common types of heart disease are. – High blood pressure – Stroke – Coronary artery disease

3 High Blood Pressure 1 out of nearly every 3 adults have HBP Blood pressure is the amount of force that is put on your blood vessels. The cause is not known, but some of the factors that have an effect on it are… – Overweight and obese – High salt diet – Stress – Family history – Smoking

4 High Blood Pressure Cont. Systolic: The top number measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats (when the heart muscle contracts) Diastolic: The bottom number measure the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats( when the heart muscle is resting between beats and refilling with blood)

6 Stroke When blood flow to a part of the brain gets blocked or bursts. 3 Types – Ischemic: Blocked blood vessel – Hemorrhagic: Burst blood vessel – TIA (Mini stroke): Temporarily blocked blood vessel Symptoms – Numbness in part or side of the body – Confusion, trouble speaking, seeing, keeping balance

8 Coronary Artery Disease A disease in which there is a narrowing of the blood vessels that supply the heart with oxygen. Plaque: a combination of cholesterol, other fatty materials, calcium, and blood components. Eventually this can cause a heart attack and/or heart failure. – Heart Attack: Where part of the heart tissue dies – Heart Failure: The heart slowly shuts down.
