Atherosclerosis By: Emma Cochran, Savannah Pleasant, Jonathan Pierce

2 Overview: Why is it Called “Heart Disease”
Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries.) A thrombus (blood clot) can form because of the buildup of plaque. Diseases that can develop from atherosclerosis : angina (chest pain), carotid artery disease, coronary artery disease, and kidney disease. Coronary artery disease is the number 1 killer of Americans About ½ of them have had heart attacks related to atherosclerosis 1 million will have a heart attack

3 Causes of Atherosclerosis
Your arteries are lined with a thin layer of cells called the, endothelium. This layer is smooth and helps prevent clots and blockage in the arteries. Atherosclerosis can develop when the endothelium is damaged. Then, when LDL is transferred through the damaged blood vessels, the cholesterol starts building plaque on the walls. Which will lead to blockage.

4 Risk Factors of Atherosclerosis
Risk factors for Atherosclerosis include: lack of physical activity, an unhealthy diet, smoking or tobacco, high blood pressure, high triglycerides in the blood, and containing high amounts of sugar on the blood (diabetes). These slowly break down the endothelium, allowing a buildup of plaque.

5 Prevention of Atherosclerosis:
To prevent such an event as Atherosclerosis, preventions are needed to be put into place. Stop Smoking! Keep in Physical Activity! Heart-healthy Diets! Low sugars Low fats

6 Is Atherosclerosis Reversible?
Atherosclerosis is reversible only if taken care of, meaning that precautions and preventions would be needed to be put in place. The preventions are explained on previous slide.
