Elements of Art: Value “Hand with Reflecting Sphere,” M.C. Escher

What is Value? Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Objective: to identify, examine, and draw values (light and dark).

Value is connected to light and how that light hits an object.

We see things because light reflects off of objects and goes into our eyes. Without light, we cannot see anything. Value is important to identify where light is in a drawing and/or painting.

A full range of value means that there is plenty of Light values called tints: Dark values called shades: To have a full range of value in your artwork you may create a value scale:

The whole point to value…. -Creates the illusion of light, highlights and shadows.   -Highlights and shadows combine to create the illusion of a light source.  Remember, without light we cannot see. Without a light source, you have no illusion.  Light Source Highlight Shadow

Vocabulary: Value Value - the darkness or lightness of a color. Value scale- a guide to creating a range of value. Tints- light values. Shades- dark values. Light source- area from where light hits an object. Highlights- areas on an object where light is hitting. Shadows- areas on an object where light does not hit. Crosshatching- When lines are placed at an angle to one another. Shading- a process used in drawing for showing levels of darkness by applying media more heavily or with a darker shade for darker areas, and less heavily or with a lighter shade for lighter areas. Gradation- a gradual (slightest) change from one shade, tone, or color to another.
