First, we will learn to use a grid for accuracy. 1.Find or take a photo of a face (non-traditional pose is best) and print in color. 2.VERY LIGHTLY grid a piece of toned paper. 3.Grid your photo (or use a plastic grid overlay) 4.LIGHTLY draw the shape of the face & hair and place the facial features.

Using a grid should help increase accuracy.

Now we want to begin to create a value drawing by finding the light and dark areas and laying down our first layer of colored pencils. LINE DRAWING VALUE DRAWING

Remember “modeling” (or shading)? We will be looking for shadows, highlights, cast shadows and reflected lights on the face. 1. 2. 3. 4. Can you identify the parts of the modeling on this sphere? Nose?

REMEMBER THESE GUIDELINES? We will use them with colored pencil as well. 1.Get the shape correct before shading! 2.Map out values very lightly before you begin shading. 3.Use short, light pencil strokes for better control. 4.Layer to darken values. 5.Shading and highlighting lines can follow the contour of the object to give it more form. 6.For realistic rendering, rounded object require gradual value changes. 7.Lose outlines. 8.Make sure you have a range of values.

Once the values have been established we will start layering on the colors from dark to light (on light papers) and light to dark (on darker paper).

The Criteria for this assignment (this is an 80 point assignment – so this is one you want to do your best on): 1.Drawing of the face uses a grid to get an accurate representation. (20 points possible) 2.Modeling on the face is accurate (shows modeling using high lights, reflected lights, shadows and cast shadows. (20 points possible) 3.Uses the “layering and burnishing” technique to create rich, blended colors. (20 points possible) 4.Art work shows evidence of time and effort and workmanship is acceptable. (20 points possible)
