Medicines Medicines- Drugs that are used to treat or prevent disease or other condition Drugs- substances other than food that change the structure or function of the body or mind All medicines are drugs, but not all drugs are medicines

Medicine categories Help prevent disease Fight pathogens, or infectious agents that cause disease Antivirals and antifungals Relieve pain Analgesics Help maintain or restore health and regulate the body’s systems Allergy medicine, body regulating (insulin, etc), antidepressant and antipsychotic medications, cancer treatments

Side effects Side effects- reactions to medicine other than the one intended Additive interaction- when medicines work together in a positive way Synergystic effect- interaction of 2 or more medicines results in a greater effect than when taken alone Antagonistic effect- when the effect of one medicine is canceled or reduced when taken with another medicine

Substance abuse Substance abuse is any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for nonmedical purposes Illicit drug use- the use or sale of any substance that is illegal or otherwise not permitted Physical consequences (overdose Mental/emotional consequences Social consequences
