Manifest Destiny Belief that the U.S. should expand West. Ocean to ocean (Atlantic to Pacific).

2. John Marshall Expanded the power of the Federal government. When a state law and a federal law were in conflict Marshall always sided with the Federal government. Established judicial review.

3. Judicial Review The right of the Supreme Court to declare a law unconstitutional. Example of unwritten constitution. Established as a result of Marbury v. Madison

4. Political Parties Federalist- Alexander Hamilton Democratic-Republicans- Thomas Jefferson Hamilton favored a national bank, tax on whiskey and imports. Wealthy and elite should govern.

5. Monroe Doctrine No further colonization of the Western Hemisphere. Any attempt to do so is considered an act of war. U.S. agrees to stay out of the affairs of Europe.

6. War of 1812 Causes- impressment, British supplying Indians with weapons on the frontier, War Hawks in Congress, desire for Canada. Results- National Anthem, Nationalism and respect from other nations, term “White House.” War heroes that become President. Treaty of Ghent- nothing changes

7. Andrew Jackson Discrimination and persecution. Indian Removal Act- move Indians west of the Mississippi River. Cherokees sue in Supreme Court – win. Andrew Jackson moves them anyway. Trail of Tears- forced migration west. 1/4th died along the way.

8. Tariff of abominations Tariff of 1828- tax on imports. North was industrialized. South was agricultural and relied on imports from Europe.

9. Florida Adams-Onis Agreement- Purchase from Spain as a result of War with Seminole Indians.

10. National Bank Jackson deposited all the money into state banks that were owned by his friends- Pet Banks

11. Farewell Address Stay out of foreign affairs- neutrality

12. Louisiana Purchase Doubled the size of the U.S. Gained Mississippi River Purchased from France for 15 million Jefferson believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution- had to switch to loose interpretation. Lewis and Clarke sent to map out the terrain.
