Tourism in the Planning Area World class accommodations, recreation and events The Daytona 500 recently is ranked as the fifth highest revenue event in the world by Forbes Magazine. Volusia County lists retail trade and accommodations & food service as the 2nd and 3rd largest industries for employment. “While efforts to attract more business and industry to the region continue, tourism remains a formidable engine driving the economy statewide and regionally.” Volusia Economic Development Newsletter

Tourism in the Planning Area Volusia County 9.5 million visitors $5.4 million spent 41,000 tourism related jobs Flagler County $2 million spent Number of visitors unknown Both counties experienced record settings tourism levels in 2015

Connecting Tourism & the Planning Process Tell the TPO Survey -- direct a question on the annual survey to tourism Modify the project evaluation criteria to specify that economic development includes tourism (increase the points assigned to projects) Continue to involve leaders in tourism and event management in transportation planning Gear our annual planning retreat towards tourism and transportation
