2 MITOMED Kick-off Meeting -Poreč, 25 September 2014 The Istrian Region includes a large part of Istria - the largest Adriatic peninsula Most of the Croatian part of the peninsula is situated in the Istrian Region - 2.820 square kilometres, which is 4,98 % of the entire surface of the Republic of Croatia The length of the Istrian coast, along with islands and islets is 539 kilometers. The west coast of Istria is more indented, and, together with islands, it is 327 kilometers long. East coast, together with islets, is 212 kilometers long 10 towns and 31 municipalities Introduction to the Region

Istrian County: 252.000 ha PA: 21.004,71 ha Coastal PA: 17.294,81 ha LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION ENVIRONMENTAL COMPONENT OF ISTRIAN TOURISM

PAs MONITORING & POLICY MONITORING: Monitoring and recording the number of visitors on an annual basis only exists in NP Brijuni and PI Kamenjak (2 out of 34 PAs) 2014 data: 102.000 vehicles during the summer season (cca 250.000 annualy) LEGISLATION: Law on Nature Protection (Official Gazettes, 80/13) – defines management programs for protected areas whithin all permitted and prohibited activities must be defined LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION

9 MITOMED Kick-off Meeting -Poreč, 25 September 2014 Croatia: 780 NATURA 2000 sites Istria: 22 PAs are in NATURA 2000 Management plans for NATURA 2000 sites in Istria are still not done. PAs MONITORING & POLICY LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION

10 MITOMED Kick-off Meeting -Poreč, 25 September 2014  6 PAs examined  Questionnaire survey  Face-to face and phone interviews  Residents in and around PAs (24% of the total Istrian population)  Questionnaire: 13 open-ended and close-ended questions Idea and conclusions: The results presented in this paper support the idea of participative conservation models for PA managers and additionally serve to illustrate possible directions for nature protection in Istria, Croatia and neighboring countries. THE STUDY ON PARTICIPATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN ISTRIA AND LOCAL RESIDENT’S ATTITUDES TOWARDS CONSERVATION LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION
