Influencing factors that can affect your choice of plaiting technique There are many factors that we need to take into consideration when choosing which plaiting technique we will use. Head and face shape – Plaits and twists will often sit close to the scalp and will not add height or width. If you are wanting to soften the face you may have to use a couple of styling techniques to achieve a suitable style Bad example to suit face shape Good example to suit face shape

Life style – you need to decide if plaiting and twisting will go with their age, job, personality and type of clothes they wear. Hair density - may have too much or too little hair for the plaiting technique.

Hair elasticity - click on link Hair elasticity – hair has the ability to stretch. When plaiting and twisting if the hair is damaged then you may cause breakage by too much tension.

Hair Texture Hair texture – Coarse there may be too much hair for the corn rows or plaiting. Medium – will suit most plaiting and twisting techniques. Fine hair- may not be strong enough for plaiting and twisting. Activity – With other members of the group, look and feel each others hair. Decide what the texture of the hair is. Compare your analysis with the rest of the group

Adverse skin and scalp conditions- You must always check the clients hair prior to styling for any adverse skin and scalp condition. You may or may not be able to carry out a service. Hair growth patters –may affect which way the hair is styled. You may need to work with the growth patters. Cultural and fashion trends - Your client may want a style of plaiting that is cultural or that is a fashion trend. Still take into consideration all of the above.
