 Young people would prefer to face the negative consequences of being drunk than the social exclusion associated with staying sober.  Those who choose not to drink have to come up with several reasons why they weren’t drinking.  To fit in, young people expect that all members of the group will drink to the same level of intoxication. However, exclusion is not just applied to those who don’t drink – it is also a potential consequence for those who drink too much.  http://www.theage.com.au/it-pro/my-name-is- australia-and-im-an-alcoholic-20100826-13tqi.html http://www.theage.com.au/it-pro/my-name-is- australia-and-im-an-alcoholic-20100826-13tqi.html http://www.theage.com.au/it-pro/my-name-is- australia-and-im-an-alcoholic-20100826-13tqi.html Social influences

 An advertisement is intended to foster positive attitudes, beliefs, and expectations about a product. When tobacco products are associated with activities such as sport, having a strong appeal to youth, there is an increased risk that smoking behaviour will be seen as acceptable, even desirable. The link between exposure to tobacco promotion and smoking behaviour is well documented. Research has confirmed that the impact of tobacco advertising is significant; even when cultural background, socioeconomic status, or parental and peer smoking behaviour is taken into consideration Tobacco sponsorship and advertising in sport

It’s not all bad news!

Positive role models

For some young people the decision not to drink is central to their identity, for others it is 'no big deal', just one of many choices  major influences stem from observing people around them. Good parental role models play a part, as does witnessing the negative effects of alcohol on others  young people feel that alcohol education and alcohol messages are based on the assumption that young people will drink. They emphasise the importance of presenting not drinking as legitimate option to young people, parents and society more broadly Choosing not to drink

 Statistics indicate that binge drinking is a huge issue in Australian society. The impact of binge drinking is felt most prominently by teenagers. While there are numerous influences that are largely out of your control. What you can do is make your own decisions and support one another in theirs. While it’s important to acknowledge and to contribute to the current social and cultural environment, its also important to choose your influences carefully. Binge drinking isn’t and shouldn’t be something that people think is a rite of passage or “part of growing up”. Alcohol choices should be thought through and carefully considered. Be true to the person you want to be and always be careful! Take home message
