What is clothing made up of? The principles that make up appealing art apply to good fashion design as well. Good Fashion has a combination of the Elements and Principles of design.

Elements of Design Color Shape Line Texture Pattern

Line Refers to an elongated mark that connects two or more points. Line encloses and divides space, creating shapes and forms. Seam lines divide and enclose space on a garment.

2 Basic Types of Lines Structural Line Decorative Line

Structural Line- What is needed to make a garment fit and is necessary for basic construction. Examples: seams, garment openings, darts. Darts- Fabric folded into a triangle and stitched to a point, adding shape and fullness. Basic tool used in pattern drafting. Decorative Line- The extras that help make garment unique. Examples: Seams and lines that do not affect the fit of the garment.

Structural Line Vs. Structural – lines required to maintain the structure of the garment; for example, seams Decorative – lines created by the designer purely for decoration; for example, a printed-on design Decorative Line

-Vertical line appears to lengthen; appears slimming as the eye moves up and down. -Horizontal line appears to shorten; appears to widen as the eye travels across. -Diagonal line appears to shorten and widen as the slant is closer to a horizontal.

- Diagonal line appears to lengthen as the slant is closer to a vertical line. -Extended diagonal lines appear to lengthen as the eye continues to move upward.
