2nd Conjugation Verbs! Lesson 10 (A)

Very regular and predictable parts: Did you notice that the verbs in this week’s vocab list look different from the ones you’ve had before? Old verbs: amo, amare, amavi, amatus Very regular and predictable parts: -o, -are, -avi, -atus 1st conjugation verbs

augeo, augēre, auxi, auctus video, vidēre, vidi, visus But these NEW verbs look kind of weird. They ALL have –eo, -ēre for the first 2 parts. But the 3rd and 4th parts don’t seem to follow a pattern: augeo, augēre, auxi, auctus video, vidēre, vidi, visus habeo, habēre, habui, habitus

2nd conjugation verbs augeo, augēre, auxi, auctus Verbs that have –eo, -ēre are called: 2nd conjugation verbs augeo, augēre, auxi, auctus video, vidēre, vidi, visus habeo, habēre, habui, habitus These verbs work the same way as your old 1st conjugation verbs. They’ll just have an –e– instead of an –a– before their ending.

Finding the Present Stem Find the second principal part of the verb. augeo augēre auxi auctus The present stem is the second principal part – re. augēre - re = augē-

Present Tense auge o auge mus auge tis auge s auge t auge nt I increase I am increasing I do increase We increase We are increasing We do increase First Person auge o auge mus You increase You are increasing You do increase You increase You are increasing You do increase Second Person auge tis auge s He increases He is increasing He does increase They increase They are increasing They do increase Third Person auge t auge nt

Future Tense auge bo auge bimus auge bitis auge bis auge bit auge bunt First Person auge bo I will increase We will increase auge bimus You will increase Second Person You will increase auge bitis auge bis They will increase Third Person auge bit He will increase auge bunt

The IMPERATIVE (command) Find the second principal part of the verb. augeo augēre auxi auctus Drop the –re: The imperative is the same as the present stem, just like we learned earlier augēre - re = Augē! Increase! Augēte! Increase! (plural)
