Making lending and learning fun with serious games Welcome, introductions Making lending and learning fun with serious games Kaye Bagshaw & Melvin Bell

It started with a Tweet… Not sure if this was the exact tweet We tried out some of the online versions of the games available We realised the potential: Board games can engage, educate and enhance learning, and make it more enjoyable

Games chosen, purchased & added to our catalogue Next steps Games were chosen to reflect current interests prevalent at Homerton Small number to begin with – to test how it would work Why keep them in the library? Better to have them as part of the library collection rather than in departments: a. usage statistics and making sure contents don’t go missing; b. all in one place not scatteered around; c. could bring people into the library who don’t often / ever use it Purchase was funded by Learning & Development lead Catalogued as we would a book – 7-day loan – contents of the box listed within the catalogue record so can track if parts go missing Games chosen, purchased & added to our catalogue

Promotion! Promotion! Promotion! Many ways of promoting: tweeting, Homertonlite (all staff weekly e-mail), Homerton Life (staff magazine), NHS Change Day 2016 game playing session Events – KAW & Nurses Day Best way is to identify those who will be most interested: practice development nurses, education leads, etc. Word spreads quickly – someone who has enjoyed playing a game spreads the word

Student nurse sessions Requested by nurse educators Useful add in a game if they have a speaker who suddenly cancels As requested by Nurse Educators

Care Certificate programmes Not without problems – at the first session I facilitated it was difficult to keep order! some of the participants v young – some talked over others – some felt “silly” playing a game – most seemed to enjoy it though Suggested by us, continued by Education leads

The Libraries Game! For Libraries Week, we made our own game and invited staff to paly outside the staff restaurant – included Dr Jargon cards as well as library questions – all correct answers got a dip in the goody bay!

Learning should be fun, and these games are just that – a fun way to learn.  By engaging in conversations and discussions with other players as you answer questions…not only do you learn something, you also build relationships with colleagues. What an enjoyable session, it really highlighted important issues in a fun way.  The board game is another innovative way of learning; it makes learning fun, interactive and also helps to test what has been taught in theory.  The team work is great; it beats ‘talk and chalk’ any day.  Learned more from other colleagues than specifically from answers.  Very good idea to stimulate discussion about communication.

Borrowing statistics Title Dr Jargon: Paediatrics 1 Drug Round Game 4 Harm Free Game Infection Control Game Masterful Mentoring 26 Stop The Pressure Game The Communication Game 17 The Nutrition Game The Sepsis Game 18 Total 70 We now have 14 games – but are they being used? A quick look at the figures – some are more popular than others and some haven’t yet been borrowed

Introduced games to local LKS colleagues to at a team event Talk about LKS Team event etc Introduced games to local LKS colleagues to at a team event Lots of Tweeting!

Lending & Learning is serious fun! Hospital Libraries and Serious Games Developed a case study with Focus Games, which we have both been trying to distribute to as many libraries as possible – some of you may even have read it!

What’s next? More promotion and identifying champions More games – The Safeguarding Game & Teams that Care Playing The Sepsis Game at a major Sepsis Conference at Homerton today! Promotion constant – displays, tweets, talking at meetings, inductions etc. We need to identify the right people to contact for the games that haven’t yet been borrowed Planning to add to our collection – currently identifying which to buy next

The team behind the games! Melvin to explain a little about Focus Games and our background etc www.focusgames.com
