3 Learning starts at home
Moment baby born – learning - everything we do talk, play etc supports learning At school we have to plan what we teach the children. Sills that help them learn effectively and make positive choices about their behaviour in and out of school. The materials we use are called Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL] You began process – were continuing – more effective if we work together, share some of the same ideas and talk about them in the same language. The workshops are called Family SEAL and they are all about working together to develop children who are happy and achieve their potential. Opportunities to: • do activities with your child; • meet other parents or carers and other people who look after children; • explore the ways in which we can work together to ensure that your child is happy and successful in school. Learning starts at home

4 Be healthy Stay safe Make a contribution Enjoy and achieve
Explain that the Government asked children and their parents/ carers what was important to them. The answer they received was five ECM outcomes for children: • be healthy • stay safe • enjoy and achieve • make a positive contribution • achieve economic well-being Schools are committed to helping children achieve these outcomes. This means that schools must help children to have the skills they need in all these areas. The school’s SEAL programme is about helping children learn the skills that they need to reach these outcomes. Be healthy Stay safe Make a contribution Enjoy and achieve Economic well-being

5 Children want to belong
Explain that children want to belong to: • their family; • friendship groups • social / community groups Activity: Think about who is important in your child’s life ……. When children start school they really want to do well and belong but sometimes find it difficult Sometimes they just don’t seem to have the skills they need to learn, get on with others and behave appropriately [Analogy party] Children want to belong

6 Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning - SEAL -
SEAL - 12 skills skills that children need to be happy and successful in school taught in school / parents can support Today we are concentrating on the social and emotional ones – see screen Explain that we are all different. Some children learn to read quickly and others are quick to understand mathematics Activity: Ask the participants, quickly think of your own child What are they quick at? How are your own children different from each other? In just the same way, some children learn social and emotional skills quickly, others take longer and might need a bit of help. They might find it hard to - sit and listen or share the toys / equipment Most children find school difficult some of the time. I am sure that most of us can think of times when we found it hard to concentrate in school and preferred to look out of the window instead! Activity: With a partner think back to their time in school and ask, ‘Can you remember a time when you found it hard?’ Sometimes we think that children are just naughty when it is really that they have not learnt the skills they need to know what to do.
