2 Presentation Mastery Stop Presenting – Start Connecting
We came up for the title for this session after a Speaking Group member shared an experience from a recent conference he attended. Stop Presenting – Start Connecting Speaking Group Workshop # 13

3 He, along with a thousand other people, were in the audience listening to a keynote speaker, who was behind the podium at a microphone. All of the sudden the power went out.

4 Without missing a beat the speaker left the podium and went to the edge of the stage and started talking to the audience. Our Speaking Group member said to all of us, “In that second the speaker stopped presenting and started…

5 Start Connecting connecting. What a difference.”
I think that most of us can relate to this story. Whether it has happened to us, or we have experienced it, as an audience member. Most of us know what it’s like when we are able to connect.

6 What can you do to increase your connection?
So what can you do to increase your connection to your audience? If your first thought is ditch the podium, you would be right. But we can’t always do that and it isn’t the only obstacle.

7 Six Steps to Start Connecting
STEP FORWARD Today I am going to offer you six steps you can take to better connect with your audience. Six Steps to Start Connecting With Your Audience

8 Obtain Greater Confidence as a Speaker
1 Obtain Greater Confidence as a Speaker Step # 1 – At the top of the list for greater connection – is greater confidence as a speaker. One of the best ways to obtain this confidence is by doing exactly what you are doing as a member of the Speaking Group. You need to get out and speak. The more you speak – the more confident you feel.

9 Where else can you get more speaking experience?
In addition to what you are doing here (at BESG) – where else can you get more speaking experience? Trainer – encourage ideas

10 Get More Experience Introduce a Speaker Be on a Panel Speak at Church

11 Develop Confident Body Language
2 The second step to greater connection is to develop confident body language that tells your audience you are comfortable with them.

12 This man may be polite but he certainly isn’t communicating confidence and connection.

How do you get confident body language? The answer comes from sociologist Amy Cuddy who shares, in one of the most watched TED Talks, how her team proved that confident poses and body language make us more confident. Her team did a study to determine the impact of power poses on one’s ability to be hired. They had 20 people to be interviewed for an important position. They split them randomly into two groups. The first group they put in a room and asked them to wait until their interview. The second group was instructed to spend their 15 minutes doing … Amy Cuddy, Body Language Shapes Who You Are Find this video at TED.com

14 Power poses like these….

15 And these. And the results were amazing
And these. And the results were amazing. The second group was rated as coming across far more confident and more importantly, more likely to be hired. They repeated the study over and over and continually achieved the same result. Many of us have found that doing these same power poses before important meeting and presentations has really increased our confident body language.

16 Imagine Connecting to the Audience
3 Imagine Connecting to the Audience Now on to Step 3 for greater connection. We all know the importance of practicing your talk. But if you really want to go beyond presenting, you need to do more than just practice. You need to really imagine connecting. This means standing up and imagining the people in your audience looking at you – wanting to connect with you. What is the best way to do this?

17 We do it with our Audience Head collection
We do it with our Audience Head collection. We set up our conference room and turn all the chairs to face us – each one with a different face perched on the back of the chair. Trainer – show group the set and one of how one of the faces is put over the back of a chair. This Audience Head collection has become so effective and popular that we now give a set to all our clients. As a BESG member you can download the six audience members from today’s workshop page.

18 4 Know Your Material We all know that these two speakers are not connecting because they are focused on their content not their audience. That is why it is so important that you know your material. The number one reason clients list for not learning their material is - time. But you can reduce the time involved and increase how well you know your content with a few tools.

19 If you haven’t attended our workshop on this topic then I encourage you to view our 10 minute video on how to learn your material better – faster. It pertains to both PowerPoint presentations as well as speeches. You can find this video on line with all the BESG Edge Workshops.

20 If you have ever watched a TED talk (quick poll – who doesn’t know what a TED Talk is? If someone doesn’t then explain they are the largest online collection of outstanding presentations given by thought leaders) especially the best TED talks you know that TED speakers are connecting to their audience at a deeper level than most business presenters. They are able to do this because…

21 Ken Robinson Brené Brown
instead of giving a presentation, they are having a conversation. Two of the most popular TED talks are Ken Robinson and Brene Brown. Both are worth watching for their gift of connection and conversation. Ken Robinson How Schools Kill CreativitySi Brené Brown The Power of Vulnerability

22 I have a boring BUSINESS topic
I know what you are thinking – “But I have a boring business topic to deliver. Not something interesting like their subjects.”

23 You can still connect with a BUSINESS topic
That may be so, but you can still connect with a traditional “boring” business topic. How?
