English Outside of the Classroom By Amber Hermanson

Special Thanks I would like to thank Cameron for a similar presentation 2 years ago. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have these ideas. I would also like to thank Deborah for giving me some other ideas as well.

Two different times Outside of the classroom Boards Lunch Talking with the students Before Class Music Library

English Board

Outside of the Classroom – Boards  Culture Corner  Talk about different cultural things  Holidays, countries, school, etc.  I try to change it every month  I add an easy quiz at the end, so that I know students are looking at my board. I always give a sticker prize for doing the quiz

Culture Board for the month of July.

Boards  Conversation Board  Put up blank paper and let the students write whatever they want.  Use a pencil, just in case they write anything bad (haven’t had that problem yet)  Can have a topic or just let them write whatever they want  I tried to do topics, and my students didn’t write about the topic. By leaving it open, I have had more success

Boards  Puzzles – on board  Easy Riddles  Word searches  Crosswords  Always give a sticker prize

Let’s try a riddle Timmy’s mother has 3 children. The first child’s name is April. The second child’s name is May. What is the third child’s name? Answer: Timmy

Lunch Time  Talk with the students in English  Always try to use English at their level  Can play games with students  English shiritori  What would you bring to an island? Using the alphabet to bring items.

Conversation Box - Deborah  Make a box in which students can write letters to the ALT  The ALT then responds to the letters  Students may need to be reminded that these things exist and try to keep their interest in them.

Talking with students  Good morning / Hello / Good afternoon  How are you today?  These are easy conversations that students can do with anyone.  Not only ALTs but I think JTEs should do too

Before Class - Music  Daily Song  Make a CD or use an MP3 Player and speaker  Take student requests  If you have access to a computer/ projector/ TV in the classroom, play the music video.  You can download music videos from YouTube by using an online converter  I use clipconverter to download my videos

Library  Let students borrow many kinds of English books  Manga (most popular)  Magazines  Level up Readers / Children books  I have a card where they sign the book out  Many students enjoy looking before class and may not borrow any books  Can find English books at many places  When an ALT returns home for a visit, they can get books then  Used books can be found at BookOff  Can also be found on amazon.jp  Also at big bookstores around Tokyo
