Five Categories of Media Web-Based Technologies Computer-Managed Learning Systems (non-Internet-Based) Teleconferencing Technologies

Five Categories of Media (continued) Cable and Broadcast Television Videotaped-Based Instruction

Computer-Managed Learning Systems (non-Internet-Based)

Computer-Managed Learning Systems (non-Internet-Based) Include non-Web-based technologies that are supported by a personal computer equipped with a non-recordable disk drive and the appropriate software. These include CD-ROM, presentation software, and digital video disk (DVD). Computer-managed learning systems may be used to support asynchronous learning environments using text, graphics, sound, animation, and video.

Currently, DVD drives can read both DVD and CD-ROM Currently, DVD drives can read both DVD and CD-ROM . However, the CD-ROM drive cannot read DVD. Digital video disks have the capacity to store larger amounts of data than the CD-ROM disk. These systems provide learner-machine interaction only. There are other applications suitable for this category that are not included in the discussion.

Computer-Managed Learning Systems CD-ROM (Compact disk read-only memory) Presentation software (example: Microsoft PowerPoint™) Digital Video Disk (DVD)

Factors to Consider Advantages Accommodates varied learning styles Eliminates geographical limitations Provides new delivery system capabilities Reduces material costs Provides flexibility in depth and breadth of information

Advantages (Continued) Requires educators to evaluate their instructional planning Promotes independent learning (asynchronous) Provides 24 hours a day access to materials

Disadvantages Requires participants to have self-discipline, motivation, and ability to manage time effectively Requires educators to have adequate writing skills and the ability to adjust to the absence of face-to-face interaction by developing a supportive learning environment

Instructional Strategies for Incorporating Computer-Managed Learning Systems

Instructional Strategies Below is a partial listing of instructional strategies and the corresponding computer-managed learning system(s). Self-directed learning (CD-ROM, DVD) Self-paced tutorials (CD-ROM, DVD) Self-study courses ( DVD)

Instructional Strategies (Continued) Discussion (presentation software) Skits (CD-ROM, DVD, presentation software) Participant feedback (CD-ROM) Simulation (DVD) Short presentations (presentation software)

Instructional Strategies (Continued) Case studies (presentation software, CD-ROM) Practical examples (CD-ROM, DVD) Instructional games (CD-ROM, DVD) Self-instructional modules (CD-ROM, DVD) Lesson exercises (CD-ROM, presentation software)

Instructional Strategies (Continued) Problem scenarios (CD-ROM) Study quizzes (CD-ROM, presentation software) Audio/visual materials (DVD, presentation software) Hands-on exercises (CD-ROM) Course exercises (CD-ROM)

Instructional Strategies (Continued) Graphics, audio, video (DVD) Animation (DVD) Simulation (DVD) Illustrations (DVD) Demonstrations (CD-ROM)

Technical Requirements Access to a computer with a CD-ROM drive or a CD-DVD drive Access to a computer with presentation software
