Applications Most North Carolina schools are on CFNC Most out-of-state schools are on the Common App If not on either – check the school’s website! COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK October 15th – 19th apply to many NC private colleges and HBCUs for FREE If you get free or reduced lunch, you qualify for a fee waiver (meaning you don’t need to pay for college applications!)

2 yr Colleges / Community College You do not need an SAT/ACT score or a certain GPA! No application fee Application opens later – start applications around Jan. 1 If you’re interested in specialty jobs (welding, air conditioning repair, etc.) check out 2 year schools! 2 year college transfer program ~ $3,000 - $5,000 per year

4 yr College checklist Pay attention to deadlines & apply early!! Early decision, early action, priority, regular, rolling Residency Determination on CFNC (for all NC colleges! – 2 yr and 4 yr) Submit SAT/ACT scores through SAT & ACT websites Notify teachers/counselors regarding recommendations at least 2 weeks early! Other important things…

Transcripts (detailed info on Student Services Website) All colleges require a transcript! If applying to an NC school, request in “application hub” on CFNC Your login is the same as your computer log-in For out of state colleges, see Ms. Elwood 1st three are free to send! After that, $5 each ASK IN ADVANCE!

Recommendations ASK TEACHERS EARLY!!!!! At least 2 weeks in advance Give an activity sheet so they know everything you’re involved in Find on the bottom of the senior pages on student services webpage Don’t sign them up until they agree Let them know the school name and the application due date Write thank you letters!

Personal Statements/Short Essays Stick to the word count Don’t waste space repeating your resume – they already have that! Be sure it sounds like your voice Edit Edit Edit – Colleges know your grades & activities, but this is your chance to show them your personality Mention what you hope to accomplish Be confident!

Is your Application Complete? Has the college received: A Completed Application ALL of your test scores A transcript An application fee/fee waiver Your FAFSA Your recommendations

Scholarships Finding Scholarships: Applying to Scholarships: Check the Student Services page for scholarship search information There are a lot of websites that will help narrow down scholarships Check individual college websites to see their scholarship deadlines Applying to Scholarships: Many applications will ask for a resume Look up free templates online List honors & AP classes, sports, clubs, community service, church activities, work experience, home responsibilities, etc. START EARLY See full-ride scholarships on Ms. Glover’s door

Important things to remember Proof-read EVERYTHING This includes making sure everything is capitalized and punctuated correctly! Have a professional email address People will take you more seriously if you email is something like jane.smith@gmail.com instead of cutekitten123@gmail.com Make sure all of your phone calls, emails, and campus visits are respectful and mature Write down all your logins and passwords! There’s a lot to keep track of and this will save you time.
