Creating a Julian Opie Portrait Lesson 4

Connector: Use the pen and ruler provided to draw and MEASURE onto the laminated pad using lines to find where the EYES, NOSE, LIPS and EARS are on the face (see below). TOP OF HEAD BOTTOM OF HEAD

If something is in proportion, what does it mean? TOP OF HEAD 1/4 WAY DOWN HEAD HAIRLINE If something is in proportion, what does it mean? Everything is the right shape and size and in the correct place. MIDDLE BETWEEN HAIRLINE AND EYES IS THE EYEBROWS 3/4 WAY DOWN HEAD NOSE, BOTTOM OF EAR 1/2 WAY DOWN HEAD EYES, TOP OF EAR MIDDLE BETWEEN NOSE AND CHIN IS THE LIPS BOTTOM OF HEAD

BIG Picture Connector Demonstration Drawing time Gallery view

Learning Outcomes All will understand how to draw the proportions of the face accurately and draw a Julian Opie portrait. Most will use markmaking lines in the texture of the hair. Some will include the tones in the hair and the highlight in the eyes.

Demonstration: TOP OF HEAD BOTTOM OF HEAD 1/4 WAY DOWN HEAD HAIRLINE MIDDLE BETWEEN HAIRLINE AND EYES IS THE EYEBROWS 3/4 WAY DOWN HEAD NOSE, BOTTOM OF EAR 1/2 WAY DOWN HEAD EYES, TOP OF EAR MIDDLE BETWEEN NOSE AND CHIN IS THE LIPS BOTTOM OF HEAD

Measure between the top and bottom of the head! Midway Review: Use a ruler to check the accuracy of your Julian Opie drawing study! Measure between the top and bottom of the head! Is the eyes and the top of the ears 1/2 way down the face? Is the hairline 1/4 of the way down the face? Is the nose and the bottom of the ears 3/4 of the way down the face? Is the lips in the middle between the nose and chin? Is the eyebrows in the middle between the hairline and eyes?

Final Review Does your work reflect Julian Opie’s style? Have you simplified... 1) The eyes to dots? The nose to either dots or a curve? The mouth to a wavey line? Have you used wavey or zig zag marks to show the texture of the hair? Have you drawn in a second tone in the hair?
