Five Great Presidents

“The Birthplace of Presidents” soon became Virginia’s nickname, with four of the first five presidents born and raised here. The only president of the first five not from Virginia was John Adams of Massachusetts.

George Washington George Washington helped win the American Revolution. Washington was chosen to be the first President under the brand new Constitution of the United States. Everything Washington did was a “first.” He set a standard for all future Presidents. Washington helped establish (set up) the brand new federal court system. He chose the first Supreme Court justices.

John Adams Adams played a huge role in pushing America towards independence. By the time Adams became our second President, our nation was caught in the middle of a fight between Britain and France over sea routes. Adams was cautious and careful. He created a strong foreign policy so the nations of Europe would respect America. In the United States, arguments over what was best for America led to the start of our nations a two party system.

Thomas Jefferson Jefferson bought a huge piece of property from France. The Louisiana Purchase would double the size of the United States. Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore new land.

James Madison Madison was known as the Father of the Constitution. During his presidency, American found itself at war with Britain again. American’s Army and Navy were not prepared, and took a beating. America’s ability to defend itself against a super-power led the nations of Europe to gain respect for the U.S. The White House was burned by the British during the War of 1812.

James Monroe President Monroe wrote a plan called the Monroe Doctrine. It warned European nations not to interfere in North and South America (Western Hemisphere).
