First American president, commander of the Continental Army.

3 John Adams March 4, 1797 – March 4, 1801
John Adams was a Founding Father, the first vice president of the United States and the second president. His son, John Quincy Adams, was the nation's sixth president.

4 Thomas Jefferson March 4, 1801 – March 4, 1809
Thomas Jefferson ( ), author of the Declaration of Independence and the third U.S. president, was a leading figure in America’s early development. During the American Revolutionary War ( ), Jefferson served in the Virginia legislature and the Continental Congress and was governor of Virginia

5 James Madison March 4, 1809 – March 4, 1817
James Madison wrote the first drafts of the U.S. Constitution, co-wrote the Federalist Papers and sponsored the Bill of Rights. He established the Democrat-Republican Party with President Thomas Jefferson, and became president himself in Madison initiated the War of 1812, and served two terms in the White House with first lady Dolley Madison.

6 James Monroe March 4, 1817 – March 4, 1825
Oversaw major westward expansion of the U.S. and strengthened American foreign policy in 1823 with the Monroe Doctrine, a warning to European countries against further colonization and intervention in the Western Hemisphere. Monroe, a Virginia native, fought with the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War ( ) then embarked on a long political career.
